In the Homestead Acts, farmers were granted a quarter section of 160 acres subdivided into four quarter-quarter sections of 40 acres each: two front forty and two back forty. The "back 40" has come to mean the most remote or inaccessible part of any place. At age 40, I accessed a place in my soul that had been remote and largely inaccessible and said confidently, clearly and out loud, "I'm gay." These are reflections from a late-in-life coming out.
